While on one hand, India has seen an increased percentage of literacy among women, and women are now entering professional fields, the patriarchal ideology of the home being a woman’s ‘real domain’ and marriage being her ultimate destiny hasn’t changed much. The matrimonial advertisements, demanding girls of the same caste, with fair skin and slim figure, or the much criticised beauty cosmetic ads, are indicators of the slow changing social mores. It was almost unthinkable for women to have a choice or a say in matters of marriage, career or life. Rather she had no voice at all.Though a number of constitutional amendments were made for women’s social, economic and political benefits, yet they were never effective to bring a radical change in the situation.Women had only the role of a ‘good wife’ to play, and if a woman ventured out to work or lead independently, she was seen as a bad woman, going against societal norms. Indian social system in late 20th century focused on high social & moral standards, the protagonist Ms Anjali considering herself to be surpassing the ideal marriage age,has grown desperate to settle down and is in search of an ideal groom for herself.Maintaining the need to remain independent in this quest,Anjali never compromises on her moral values. She has set off in this search on her own.Her father is a retired professional, has little but no concern of his daughter’s marriage and is rather seen more interested in assuring his never lessening food cravings. Her mother assumes a balancing role through everyday compromises and presents an ideal Indian wife who is expected to cook food and eat only after the men, with whatever meagre amount of food is left. With the central female character, others can be looked as the different kinds of people originating from the surrounding socio-economic strata. Anjali’s colleague Mr. Prabhune, does not bear one of the ideal persona of his time but is trying hard to get female attention. He considers these avenues as an opportunity to enrich his life, of a married male bound in contemporary societal normative, which he finds dis interesting. He is considered creepy with is over friendly approaching behavior towards Anjali but at the same time keeps away from imposing himself on Anjali beyond a certain limit. Shekhar, a Mumbai resident, Anjali’s recent interest,is a strange& suspicious character but at the same time comes out as a lady charmer. Anjali & Shekhar happen to travel together from Jalgoan to Pune where Anjali learns about him, through an interaction and grows interested in him as he appears to bear all qualities that she seeks in her ideal match. They both cross paths time and again when Shekhar pays a visit to her house and invites her to his hotel for some lonely time. Upon refusal to meet alone in a hotel room, Shekhar makes inviting calls and visits her house to charm her and make believe the connection. Making her mind,Anjali makes a courageous move against her personal norms to meet him at the hotel only to learn about his uninformed departure back to Mumbai. Anjali, makes an undying attempt by travelling all the way to Mumbai with a hope to meet Shekhar and work things out. Upon reaching Shekhar’s house located in Grant Road, things take a surprising development when Anjali stumbles upon his look alike, who claims to be Shekhar’s twin brother Bondhu. Bondhu comes across more gentlemen like to Anjali who has developed a liking for him too. Although upon sudden absence of Bondhu and arrival of Shekhar, Anjali gets confused as she gets intuitions of Bondhu being an imitation made by Shekhar himself. She resists to tell it out to Shekhar and patiently awaits return of Bondhu as things develop further. If one looks at the status of the developments in the play until now, one has to look at two sides of the coin; one side which is promising, and one side which is dubious.Caught in this confusion when she has to make up her mind as to who she wants to approach with a marriage proposal, things hit a rock bottom as she gets abducted by Shekhar and raped. This play extends a differing experience to a viewer of Conventional, Contemporary and commercial writing and dramatics.Mr. Vijay Tendulkar beautifully promotes an independent Indian woman who has to make her way through all the socialized prejudices against her, and highlights how the men yet have to allow and accept the women to be equal participants in the society’s way forward.Women in India have slowly started recognizing her true potential. She has started questioning the rules laid down for her by the society. As a result, she has started breaking barriers and earned a respectable position in the world.
