Day 1
You should plan to fly into Bagdogra Airport by an afternoon flight. We will receive you and transfer you to the next door Hotel Marinas. After a quick lunch, we will change to riding gear and familiarise with our mounts.
We will brief you on the ride modalities then ride up the Darjeeling hill. The ride is up steep climbs and twisty turns through lush green tea estates. We will stop at Observatory Hill for a 360 degree view of this beautiful hill town, before checking into a hotel near the Chaar Rasta.
For the tea aficionados, Darjeeling is heaven - home to some of the world’s best black tea ranging from Rs 5000/- to Rs 50,000/- for a kilo. Do remember to sample the variety and take some along with you.
Get ready to party tonight at Gatty’s Café or Glenary or any one of the several pubs and bars. There are live bands with great rinks and food. But do turn in by 11 pm since, you have a sunrise ride.
Day 2
We ride out 45 minutes before sunrise to Tiger Hill, the highest point in this area. Weather Gods willing, we will see a dazzling sunrise view of the Kanchenjunga and the snow covered peaks of the entire eastern Himalayan range. On a clear day you can even see Mount Everest from here.
After breakfast, we ride out to Pelling in West Sikkim. The route cuts across the lush green valleys, following River Teesta till we reach the confluence with River Rangit. Further up, we will take a well-deserved break at the view point near Melli to watch the magnificent confluence of these rivers.
The 300 year old Pemayangtse Monastery planned, designed and founded by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, will be involve a short detour. We will pay homage at this important monastery which is one of the oldest in Sikkim.
We will check into our Hotel in Peling by afternoon. Pelling is known for serene holy lakes, old Monasteries and pristine landscape. We will visit the magical Khechuapari Lake and see Kanchenzongkha Waterfalls and then visit Yuksom, the ancient capital of Sikkim before returning to the hotel. Treat yourself to authentic Sikkimese cuisine with Thukpa, Momos, Vegetable curry and soup. Then, snuggle to sleep in the back drop of the third highest mountain range in the world.
Day 3
You are strongly advised to wake up early and catch a sunrise view of Kamnchenzongkha. Post breakfast, we brief and ride to the junction town of Chungthang. From there we continue on the Northern Axis for over 210km all the way to Lachen. This is a hard ride with nearly 8 hrs of saddle time. Lunch will be enroute.
We aim to reach Lachen before nightfall. Situated at the beginning of the Tibetean Desert Plateau, Lachen is a remote and quiet village. After a hot shower, you must try Chaang, as you can soak yourself with views of this picturesque villa. This is a fermented cereal-based alcoholic beverage sipped from a bamboo mug using a thin bamboo pipe. The mug has millet topped with warm water that is topped until the millet loses its flavour. No visit to Sikkim is complete till you try this at least once. After a hot meal, your cosy bed will be welcoming.
Day 4
After breakfast, we ride out to North Sikkim Plateau (an extension of Tibetan Plateu). Those made of sterner stuff, can hazard a dip in the freezing Gurudongmar Tso. After lunch enroute, we ride to Lachung, the valley of the Rhododendron flowers. We may also see Chopta Valley and Thangu before checking into our hotel at Lachung. The evening is free to visit Lachung Monastery. We stay tonight at Lachung.
Day 5
Today we ride to pay homage at Rumtek Monastery. Originally built under the direction of Changchub Dorje, 12th Karmapa Lama in the mid-1700s, Rumtek served as the main seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Sikkim for some time. The monastery is the largest in Sikkim and is home to the monks of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
Resplendent in the vibrant colors of the sacred art that adorns it, the monastery of Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre, the largest in Sikkim, sits 5,500 feet above sea level, set into a hill facing the city of Gangtok.
We will then ride onto Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. Gangtok is a happening town with great nightlife. Café Live and Loud, Pub 25 and X’cape are some of the better known hang-outs that serve great beers and international cuisine along with live music. You must try out the momos, that are so different from the ones we get in the mainland.
Day 6
Today you would see the beautiful East Sikkim. We brief and ride after breakfast to Changu lake, where you can switch your mount to a colourfully attired Yak.
We then head onto Nathula pass which was the exchange point for the Great Sil Route of year. Say hello to soldiers of the Chinese army and mingle with our soldiers as they guard our Northern Border.
We will then pay homage at Harbhajan Baba Mandir, a shrine dedicated to a veteran soldier. The traditions and customs of the Indian Army as well as the quaint practices of this shrine are sure to fascinate you.
We will then ride down to Kalimpong hotel for our night stay.
Tonight we will feast on authentic Nepali cuisine. Starting with Raksi, a traditional homemade moonshine alcohol, you will enjoy the earthy and fresh flavours of this mountain cuisine. Of special note is the Mismas Tarkari (Seasonal mixed vegetables cooked in a local style), Chyau ko Tarkari (Mushroom curry cooked in a traditional way), Gundruk ko Sukuti (Fermented green leafy vegetables with Nepali spices) and Saag (Seasonal fresh green leaves boiled and sautéed with spices. A local favourite is the Khukhura / Khasi /Maccha ko Ledo which is a superb rich gravy of chicken/ fish or mutton.
Day 7
After a lazy morning and breakfast, it’s now just a short ride returning to Bagdogra. The traffic is heavy and so we will not make good time. We will reach our hotel in the afternoon and return our bikes.
We then bid farewell to you as you fly out to your next destination.
