This is the first public screening in India of four powerful docu-animations from Myanmar released under the title "Stand Up for Women! Stand Up for Peace!"
This project is initiated by Yangon Film School, Myanmar in collaboration with mentors Debjani Mukherjee and Paromita Vohra from India.
Violence against women is prevalent throughout Myanmar - including areas affected by the present day political conflict. The four short docu-animations aim to give a voice to the heart-breaking stories of women and girls who have been victims of gender-based violence, especially rape as a war weapon.
Combining documentary voices with animation, these powerful short films help audiences to understand that gender-based violence is not a private affair but a matter of social concern and that peace and security are essential in order to create a society in which women’s lives are respected and protected.
This screening has graciously been made possible by the Goethe Institute Mumbai.
UPDATE: TWO OF THE FILM MAKERS WILL BE COMING ESPECIALLY FOR THIS SCREENING FROM MYANMAR AND WILL SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL INSIGHTS!
In this moving film a woman living with her family in a camp for internally displaced people in Kachin State recalls how war drove her from her village and asks if her dream of returning to her peaceful existence at home will ever come true.
Kayah Lily
A thirteen-year-old rape survivor describes the day she was attacked in the woods and how, with support from her family and teachers, she has struggled to make a new life for herself in spite of her traumatic experience.
Wave
An independent female humanitarian activist from Shan State describes the trauma she experiences in working in an environment pervaded by despair but also her commitment to helping those forced to flee armed conflict.
Limbo
Tells the powerful story of a 19-year-old woman who is raped at home in Kayin State by her uncle. Initially pressured by her aunt and uncle to remain silent and abort the child that resulted from the attack, she is now determined to obtain justice in order to bring up her young son in an equal society.
The screening will be followed by a small talk by the facilitators Debjani Mukherjee and Paromita Vohra who have spent many months in Myanmar with the women and girls whose stories we are presenting.
