The Essential Agra Gharana
A Khayal Concert by Waseem Ahmed Khan
The Agra Gharana is one of the richest and most prominent schools of North Indian Classical music. Known for a treasure trove of traditional compositions Agra gharana musicians have a unique aesthetic lineage. Known for their innate felicity for including intricate, complex rhythmic patterns or layakari, the Agra gharana musicians are also known for their methodical raga expositions.
The Agra Gharana has been at the forefront of the evolution and growth of Hindustani music and has had great musicians and stalwarts like Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan, and Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan among many others.
Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan is a torchbearer of this musical lineage, and has studied under his grandfather Ustad Ata Hussain Khan and his father Ustad Naseem Ahmed Khan. He is a gharanedaar (imbued in the distinctive characteristics and traditional strengths of his lineage through direct family links) musician who is widely regarded as a modern great and contemporary voice of the Agra Gharana. His music is intense, passionate and steeped in the electrifying aesthetic power of the full gamut of approaches and textures including the exquisite nom tom in the opening alaap.
He will present some rich compositions and selection of raga from his family’s inheritance. He will be accompanied by Gurumurthy Vaidya on Tabla and Bharat Hegde on Harmonium.
