Conceptualized in 2011, the first edition of the Gig Week was launched in July of the same year. The seven-day affair was introduced at a time when Delhi had a struggling gig scene, and a community of artists, waiting to burst out. The first ever show featured artists like Barefaced Liar, Half Step Down, and The Doppler Effect, Shantanu Pandit and Rounak Maiti, and managed to create enough buzz for round two.
The second edition in 2012 hosted close to 30 artists and sold out all seven shows.
Every year, the Gig Week team brings together fresh new artists and music, those who have either never played before, or those which Delhi music lovers don't get to see. Over the last five years, the festival has gathered a dedicated following in the city, staging different genres of music at different venues each night. Over the five editions in Delhi, the festival has staged over a 100 different artists from all over India.
The music festival has also consistently worked with skilled designers, who have managed to give an alternative look to the 7-day celebration, while imbibing its all-inclusive artsy vibe.
This year, the Gig Week crew is bringing the week-long festival to Mumbai and Pune too! As for the Delhi edition, it will feature bands Skyharbor, Kraken and Yatin Srivastava Project, singer-songwriters Sharvi, Mali, Josh Menon and Gabriel Daniel, jazz players Revista Do Samba, Aditya Balani and Luiza e Pedro, alt rockers Spud In The Box, The Family Cheese and When Chai Met Toast, ska and anime punk acts Ska Vengers, The Fanculos and Mosko, singers Raja Kumari, Diplomats of Sound and Prabh Deep, finally, a fusion and ambient music line-up of Advaita, As We Keep Searching and The Hansraj Projekt for the finale.
With these artists, the original, 'champion the artist' vibe, guaranteed stellar performances and venues that are well-versed with hosting gigs, the 2016 Gig Week looks promising, and almost unmissable.
