About the Event

At 83, Shyam Benegal’s list of achievements is undoubtedly something to aspire for.

Being one of the pioneers of the new cinema in India, the core subjects of his films have been varied in nature but mainly centered around contemporary Indian experience. Problems of development, social and cultural change appear on many levels as a continuing thread in practically all his films.

In this masterclass, Shyam Benegal discusses Manthan (1976). Featuring Girish Karnad, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah. Apart from being a national award winner, the was the second crowd funded film in the world and perhaps the first one in India. The film traces the journey of a milk co-operative movement in Gujarat pioneered by Dr Varghese Kurian, popularly known as 'Amul'.
