Long before TVs or films were invented, Tholu Bommalata used to be one of the major forms of storytelling for the people of Andhra Pradesh. The leather puppets would be designed to look like Rama or Ravana, the mythical figures of Indian folklore. Late into the night, the puppets would dance, accompanied with the beat of traditional drums and a melodious narrative. Tholu Bommalata is appreciated for its incredible history and exquisite beauty.

Tholu bommalata literally means the dance (atta) of the leather (tholu) puppets (bommalu). The core of the performance is represented by mythological stories. The performance will be of 1 hour duration and includes puppet skits and is accompanied by live music. On the stage the puppets appear behind a white curtain, and the audience sees their colored shadows enlivened by a light source.

Visual story telling transcends language barriers. To understand and appreciate this unique artform, presented in Telugu, just follow the story by following the visuals. The whole experience is musical, colorful and extremely entertaining. Translators will also be present to help you understand any specific piece better, although we bet you will be so engross, you wont need them :)
