About the Event
The power of good story multiplies when it's Twice Told. You think you know how the story goes when you've read it. But then you hear it again and it is fresh! TwiceTold is proud to host a discussion with Kunal Purohit about his book H-Pop: The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars. Kunal Purohit has been a journalist for over 13 years, writing on issues of development, politics, inequalities, gender and the intersections between them. He is an independent journalist and, has, in the recent past, reported on issues like the country's agrarian crisis, developmental inequities in some of India's poorest areas as well as on hate crimes and the rise of Hindu nationalism across the country. He spent nearly a month, in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, trying to understand what was driving these hate crimes and how they were altering societal dynamics and the cultural fabric of the places where they occurred.
He is an alumnus of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London, from where, as a Felix Scholar, he obtained an MSc in Development Studies with distinction.
Kunal has, in the past, received the Ramnath Goenka Award For Excellence in Civic Journalism, the Statesman Award for Rural Reporting and the UNFPA-Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitive Reporting. He has also received various fellowships and journalism grants. His work can be found in the Hindustan Times, IndiaSpend, Al Jazeera, South China Morning Post, Deutsche Welle, The Wire, FirstPost among others.
The discussion will be chaired and led by Gopal MS, also known as Mumbai Paused. Gopal MS is a photographer and writer who has been documenting life on the streets of Mumbai at mumbaipaused.com for the last 10 years. He loves the city and the stories that spill out on to the streets of the city with limited space. He is also the author of several photobooks based on his documentation of the city.
He is the winner of the first T S Satyan Memorial Award for Photojournalism in 2011. His work has also been featured in India's leading newspapers and magazines and is considered one of the most important documentary photographer of Mumbai and urban life in the fast-changing metropolis.
