Chitpur has a unique historical ecosphere—a wide stretch of busy bazaars with lesser-known heritage sites and unique shops serving local cuisines. Chitpur also embodies some of the city’s finest narratives—of old temples that can be traced back to the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, of modern markets established during the British regime and of Kolkata's largest mosque. We will walk through areas like Ezra Street, once a well-known settlement of Baghdadi Jews in Kolkata, and Chitpur Road, the oldest road in Kolkata. Discover the city’s finest stories with me, Amitabha, as we explore the nooks and crannies of Chitpur.
Some interesting places we will cover during the walk are:
- Lalbazar Police Headquarters: Built in 1918, this magnificent building acts as the headquarters of the Kolkata Police. It was declared a heritage site by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
- The principal mosque of the city built by the Kutchi Memon Jamat, a small community of Sunni Muslims from Kutch.
- Salehjee Musafirkhana: Established in 1889 by members of the Sunni Bohra community, this is one of the oldest guesthouses in Chitpur.
As a giveaway, you also get a Fabindia coupon worth INR 500!
Please Note:
- Wear comfortable shoes
- Carry a small backpack with a water bottle and a small handkerchief
- Carry an umbrella or sun hat for protection against the sun rays
