ABOUT THE URBAN SOALCE BOOK LOVERS' CLUB:

The Urban Solace Book Lovers' Club for started in 2010 as a result of a meet-up of writers whose stories were published in the book "Chicken Soup for the Indian Teachers Soul" inspired by the energy of this experience "The Urban Solace Book Lovers' Club was born. From there it has grown from strength to strength hosting its monthly meet on the second Sunday of every month. Over the years the club has hosted over 50 published authors to discuss their writings, and these writers were the best from Bangalore, India and around the world who have sought us out to experience this dynamic of our club.

Today The Urban Solace Book Lovers' Club has a set of loyal supporters and a sterling reputation of being the longest running book club in the city in a cafe setting and is sought after by several writers from Bangalore and across the country to be featured in our experience.

ABOUT THE BOOK: The Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The Ascent of Man is a 13-part British documentary television series produced by the BBC and Time-Life Films first broadcast in 1973. It was written and presented by Polish-British mathematician and historian of science Jacob Bronowski, who also authored a book adaptation. Intended as a series of "personal view" documentaries in the manner of Kenneth Clark's 1969 series Civilisation, the series received acclaim for Bronowski's highly informed but eloquently simple analysis, his long, elegant monologues, and its extensive location shoots. The programme began broadcasting on BBC2 at 9 pm on Saturday, 5 May 1973 and was released in the US 7 January 1975.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jacob Bronowski

Jacob Bronowski (born January 18, 1908, Poland—died August 22, 1974, East Hampton, New York, U.S.) was a Polish-born British mathematician and man of letters who eloquently presented the case for the humanistic aspects of science.

While Bronowski was still a child, his family immigrated to Germany and then to England, where he became a naturalized British subject. He won a scholarship to the University of Cambridge, where he studied mathematics. He not only achieved high honours in mathematics but also received critical acclaim for his poetry and prose. After receiving his Ph.D. (1933) from Cambridge, he taught mathematics (1934–42) at the University College of Hull. During World War II Bronowski pioneered in a field now known as operational research and worked to increase the effectiveness of Allied bombing. After the war he headed the projects division of UNESCO (1948) and then worked for Britain’s National Coal Board (1950–63).

ABOUT THE CURATOR: Anupa K. Ramana

Anupa’s experience includes Human Resources, Big 4 Consulting, on-site stints in the UK and US, and Corporate Leadership Training with an IT Major, before pivoting to High School Education.

A post-graduate from XLRI, she has since taught IB, IGCSE and As/A Level English, and the IB Diploma, to students of some of the best Schools in the city and country.

Anupa’s recent workshop offerings are based on multiple intelligences through her website anukey.in

Her interests include travel, history, archaeology, (specifically, the Saraswati Civilization), and the written word - reading, writing, poetry, language, rhetoric, stylistics and drama.

Anupa is also a Sanskrit aficianado.
