A Lecture demonstration by Ruwanthie de Chickera
In 2022 there was an incredible, peaceful people’s uprising in Sri Lanka, also called the ‘Revolution of Love’. Ruwanthie de Chickera, a Sri Lankan playwright, was among the many artists who worked at the centre of this ‘leaderless’ people’s movement. In a two-hour lecture demonstration, she will reflect on how modern-day people’s movements can come to be, how they morph and how they can grow to be invincible through the unshakable commitment to non-violence and creative surrender.
Ruwanthie de Chickera is a playwright, screenwriter, theatre director and actor trainer based in Sri Lanka. She has written and directed over thirty original plays and two screenplays, including the award-winning film Machan. As a cultural activist, Ruwanthie writes and speaks about issues of social justice, art and life. She is the artistic director of Stages Theatre Group, which supports artists through employment and provides free actor training to children and youth artists. She has co-headed the drafting of a Cultural Policy for Sri Lanka.
