Who is Penn Masala?
They're South Asia's premier a capella band - meaning they sing without instruments, and use various vocal effects to create background sounds. The band consists of a bunch of students from the University of Pennsylvania and the lineup changes every year. They've performed sold-out shows around the world, and have had people like Barack Obama and the Ambanis in attendance!
They're touring the country this summer and if you're a fan of music like Ed Sheeran, Arijit Singh, Coldplay, old Bollywood songs or are just looking for a different musical experience, you should check them out. While they have several originals, many of their songs involve east-meets-west mashups!
To give you a taste of their music, we asked them for their own top picks, and here they are!
Viva La Vida (Coldplay) + Jashn-e-Bahara (Javed Ali)
This is not just a great mashup, but the footage will give you a good idea of how a capella singing happens!
Chaiyya Chaiyya (Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi)
This classic from Dil Se has been reworked by Penn Masala - the atmosphere of the train scenes and the chugging of the train are something else!
Fix You (Coldplay) + Ishq Bina (Taal)
One of their best mashups is taking one of Coldplay's best songs with one of AR Rahman's best. The result is dreamy, and that transition between songs - wow!
Aadat (‎Atif Aslam) + Apologize (One Direction)
An absolute gem this - two totally divergent styles of music almost seamlessly come together. Unlike many of the others, the two composite songs mesh with each other - making this even better!

This mashup features adorable footage of the band when they were kids!
Heartless (Kanye West) + Kabhi Kabhi (Rashid Ali)
You probably never thought a US rapper and Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na would go together. That is, till you hear this.
Tonight (Enrique Iglesias feat. Ludacris) + Dilliwaali Girlfriend (Pritam)
The boys go all boy band on this - complete with outfit and dance! The segue of songs will hit you when you least expect it. And again, take in a moment to soak it in - there are no instruments (only mouths!) involved!
Shape Of You (Ed Sheeran) + Mann Meraa (Gajendra Verma)
Deviating slightly from the pure a capalla format here, the mashup is still pretty darn awesome.
